Chapter 15

Ana rode on the back of a coal train, sometimes in a trance, sometimes in a rage, sometimes in confusion and so much pain that she felt she would shatter into a million pieces if anyone touched her.

None of this made sense.

Her mother’s name had been Olivia Caddel? Then what? She changed it at some point, before she died?

Ana had known that her family hadn’t always lived in Aershire. Following her mother’s death in a house fire, Ana and Mortimer had moved there.

Oddly enough, Ana never knew the town she spent her infant months in. Her mother had always been a sore topic. When brought up, Mortimer’s shoulders would slump and a deep sadness would enter his eyes.

He never said he wished not to talk about Elsabeth, but Ana wasn’t dumb. Not wanting to cause her father pain, she simply learned to avoid the topic.

Which meant there was still much she didn’t know. Apparently.

Before leaving Ecrin, Martha -- for the woman finally introduced herself after some more discussion -- took Ana to the place where “Olivia” had lived with her husband and infant daughter.

The lot had been rebuilt on, a newer house now standing in the spot where the old one burned to the ground. Idling at the gate, staring at the place her mother drew her last breath, Ana was overcome with emotions.

Anguish. Loss for something she couldn’t remember. Confusion. Anger.

Did Mortimer know about this? What more was he hiding?

She had pumped Martha for more information, but there was little to give. Ana’s parents moved to Ecrin the year before Ana was born. Her father worked at the telegram office, and her mother sometimes substituted at the local school. One night, before Ana was yet a year old, a fire killed Elsabeth. She’d been home with Ana, who was pulled out of the blaze without a mark on her.

Shortly after that, Mortimer took Ana and left town. No one in the neighborhood heard from him again.

Why had Elsabeth gone by Olivia Caddel then? Or was that her real name, and Elsabeth only an identity created by Mortimer?

Why lie about a dead woman’s name?

Ana could only think of one reason: because someone was after them.

But who? Another loan shark? According to Martha, Mortimer hadn’t owned a business in Ecrin. He’d merely been an employee at the telegram office, not someone who would take out loans.

The more Ana thought about it, the more twisted her head became. She needed answers, and there was only one place to get them.

With biscuits from Martha wrapped in her vest pocket and the framed photograph of her mother in her pack, Ana jumped on the first train out of Ecrin. Aershire was only several hours away, and she could make it there before dark.

Still, several hours felt like a lifetime.

Attempting to contact Fyrenza helped. Some.

I hope you can hear me. I was just in Ecrin, looking for you. Turns out my mother had another name before I was born. Which doesn’t make any sense at all.
